Contact with Prospects

Impermissible Actions: Strict NCAA guidelines prohibit what a representative of athletics can do with a prospect. In general, anyone not employed by Cornell University is prohibited from contacting a prospect or a prospect's family to encourage the prospect to participate in Cornell intercollegiate athletics. Representatives of athletics interests are specifically prohibited from the following:

  • Contacting a prospect in person on or off campus.
  • Writing or phoning a prospect or member of the prospect's family.
  • Contacting a prospect's coach, principal, or guidance counselor to evaluate the prospect.
  • Providing a benefit to high school, prep school or community college coaches.
  • Contacting an enrolled student-athlete at another institution to encourage them to transfer to Cornell to participate in intercollegiate athletics.
  • Making arrangements for a prospect or a prospect's family to receive money, payment of a benefit or financial aid of any kind.

Limited Exception: Student-athletes do not have to be treated differently than other applicants in the admissions process. If you are a member of the Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador Network or CAAN and are assigned to interview student who are also athletes you may contact the student for these purposes, but for only these purposes! CAAN members may not contact prospects for the purposes of recruiting.

Another Limited Exception: If a family friend or neighbor is a "prospect" then you may continue to maintain this relationship; however, you may never have a recruiting conversation.
