CORNELL 4, U.S. National Team Development Program 2
We had a good performance on Saturday night with a 4-2 win over the U.S. National Team Development Program. You can definitely see the development on our own young team during the past two exhibition games. We put many shots on goal (44), while allowing just 17 against a team that went 3-1 with wins over Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Michigan Tech. Especially good was the fact that we out-shot them 32-4 in the final two periods.
USA scored first just 1:11 into the game but Freshman forward Ondrej Psenicka converted a rebound to even the score with 22 seconds remaining in the first period. Midway through the second period, the visitors scored again but that lead was short-lived, as Junior forward Ben Berard’s power-play-shot went off the skate of Junior Matt Stienburg about 30 seconds later.
The score remained 2-2 until the 14:45 mark of the third period when Berard scored consecutive power-play goals at 14:45 and 15:03 to make it 4-2 in our favor. On the first goal, Berard fired a shot over the goaltender’s shoulder from the right circle with us having the benefit a two-man advantage. We won the face-off and Berard fired a laser from the top of the left circle that pinged off the iron and into the net giving us the two-goal margin.
Senior forward Max Andreev and Sophomore defenseman Tim Rego each had two assists.
Each of our three goaltenders played a period each. Freshman Joe Howe made 12 saves in the first frame, classmate Ian Shane manned the pipes with two stops in the middle stanza, and Senior Nate McDonald earned the win with one save in the final 20 minutes.
The regular season starts this weekend with a pair of home games vs. Alaska-Fairbanks [1-5]. The visitors have played Clarkson four times, winning one game.
